This Sunday, the 29th, is a fifth Sunday, which means it’s a Rest Sunday!
As you know, Roots has a unique monthly worship rhythm. On the first Sunday of the month, we gather in small groups. We call this week, “Journey Groups Sunday.” There are currently two Journey Groups: 1. Grounds of Being – a theology discussion group that meets at SK Coffee, and 2. Spiritual Friends – a space for contemplative reflection led by trained spiritual directors. (Stay tuned for a more detailed update from Pastor Osheta about this Journey Group next week!)
On the second and third Sundays of each month, we gather at SPNN for worship, including teaching, communion, musical worship, and kids ministry. We call these “Teaching Sundays.” We’re currently in a teaching series called “Center of Gravity,” in which we’re exploring the essential teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7).
On fourth Sundays we also gather for worship at SPNN, but our focus shifts to fellowship. These gatherings might include a meal, a time for dialogue, or even the Moravian “Lovefeast” (a simple meal of a sweet bread and drink). These are our “Fellowship Sundays.”
Any fifth Sunday, like we have this month, we offer as a sabbath. We call these “Rest Sundays” and we don’t hold a service at SPNN or anywhere else. Instead, we encourage misfits to use this time to connect with the divine through the creation. Scripture says the creation shows God’s glory and that we can know God through our knowledge of God’s world. So some misfits go for walks or hikes. Others take to the water. However you connect with God, this is your time.
