According to Jesus, the two-fold Greatest Commandment is: Love God & Love your neighbor as yourself. In modern societies, to love one’s neighbor entails seeking justice for everyone. Dietrich Bonhoeffer discovered this after his time in Harlem as he resisted the rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany, and we are reminded by Paul that “whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” (Rom. 13.9b) Today, we who find ourselves in the 21st century United States are called to love our neighbor by seeking to create a society where everyone can flourish.
