The Moravian Seal

Moravian Seal The Moravian Seal combines the symbol of the “Victorious Lamb” with the Moravian Motto, which in Latin is: “Vicit Agnus Noster Eum Sequamur” but translated into English reads: “Our Lamb has Conquered, Let Us Follow Him”.

Jesus is referred to as the “Lamb of God” by John the Forerunner in the Gospels and is depicted as a “lamb who has been slain” while “seated on the throne” of God in the book of Revelation. In these two references, we can see the ways early Christians thought about Jesus’s death and resurrection. It was both an offering made from self-giving love and a victory over the powers of sin and death.

The combination of the Victorious Lamb symbol and the Moravian motto dates back to the 16th century and represents the Jesus-centered Moravian faith well.

“It shows the centrality of Jesus Christ and testifies to the mystery that by the sacrifice of his life he overcame the destructive powers of sin and death. He was willing to suffer evil and violence rather than to inflict violence upon others. When he died on the cross, it appeared as if the forces of evil had conquered the power of love and mercy. But God raised him from death and granted him victory over sin and death. As believers we are called to follow Christ’s way and witness to his message of non-violent love.”
